Habitat:
Swamps and wet woods (Gleason & Cronquist 1991).

Species Description:
Perennial herb.

Phenology:
Flowering Period: Early April to late June.

Diagnostic Characteristics:
Spikelets are strongly compressed and large, 5-9.5 mm in length. The two glumes are different from each other, one long and narrow and the other shorter wider second one. The second lemma with an awn 3.5-7 mm. This plant is found in swamps.

Management:
Changes in moisture/hydrologic conditions of the habitat for this species would likely be detrimental. Changes could result from overstory removal, stream/wetland alteration or impacts due to erosion or soil deposition. Exotic pest plants are a threat to this species.
