Habitat:
Edges and openings in rich woods.

Species Description:
Shrub.

Phenology:
Flowering Period: Early April to late May.

Diagnostic Characteristics:
This elderberry differs from the common species in having red berries and the infloresence arranged as a panicle rather than in 5 rays. The pith (center part of the woody stem) is brown. The young parts of the plant are usually finely hairy.

Management:
Timber removal would be detrimental. Disturbance such as ATV trails, timber removal or any activity that results in increased erosion and weed invasion will be detrimental.
