Habitat:
Swamps and ponds in shallow water.

Species Description:
Perennial herb.

Phenology:
Flowering Period: Early July to late October.

Diagnostic Characteristics:
Wetland plant with sepals spreading to recurved in fruit, all flowers unisexual. Petioles, peduncles and pedicels slender and firm. Leaves unlobed and usually linear-lanceolate but the emersed leaves may have lobes. Scape is weak and often bent at the lowest whorl of flowers. Lowest fruiting heads sessile or with pedicels less than 1 cm. Beak of achenes 0.8-1.4 mm.

Management:
Avoid changes in moisture/hydrologic conditions at the site. Changes could result from overstory removal, stream/wetland alteration or vegetation removal that would result in increased erosion.
