Diagnostic Characteristics: Potamogeton illinoensis is an aquatic species with the submersed leaves 50 mm wide which is large for this group of plants. The leaves are flat, with 7-19 veins and have petioles shorter than the blades and the floating leaves are ovate to oblong with abruptly pointed tip.

Management: Avoid changes in moisture/hydrologic conditions at the site. Changes could result from overstory removal, stream/wetland alteration or vegetation removal that would result in increased erosion.

Global Range: Ranges from Quebec to British Columbia south to southern California, Utah, New Mexico, and Texas.
