Habitat: Deep loess or alluvial soils in light to dense shade of rich mesic wooded slopes possibly associated with large river valleys.

Species Description: Perennial herb.

Phenology: Flowering Period: Early July to late October.

Diagnostic Characteristics: Polymnia laevigata is somewhat similar vegetatively to P. canadensis. It can be distinguished from P. canadensis by its smoother, more deeply dissected leaves and narrower leaf segments, its smaller flowering heads and 4-6 ribbed achenes.

Management: Timber removal would be detrimental. Exotic pest plants are a threat to this species and should be removed. Avoid creating access to the site through trail or road construction.

Global Range: Appears to be mainly centered in the southern Cumberland Plateau of TN and possibly n. AL and GA (based on known distribution) with peripheral (or disjunct) populations in KY, MO, and FL.
