Habitat: Sandy soil and barrens on the coastal plain (Gleason & Cronquist 1991); dry sandy pineland and oak scrub (Fernald 1970).

Diagnostic Characteristics: This member of the Scrophulariaceae has opposite leaves below the branches and are usually gone at antithesis (flowering). It is a small plant, ranging from 1 to 4 dm in height. The small flowers are in the upper axils and are straight with 4 stamens and the lower lip 3-lobed. The small (8-10mm) fruit are flattened and generally ovate. The rarer of the two varieties is var. pectinatum which has bractreal leaves toothed and stem leaves 2-8 mm wide.
