Habitat:
Shallow depressions and ledges of limestone glades and prairies.

Species Description:
Perennial herb.

Phenology:
Flowering Period: Early April to late June.

Diagnostic Characteristics:
This species of quillwort is terrestrial and associated with calcareous soils, especially flat seasonally wet limestone outcrops. These plants produce spores at the base of the leaves and the megaspores produced by I.butleri average over 0.45 mm wide. Leaves are green to the base and can vary from 6-20 cm long.

Management:
Disturbance such as ATV trails, timber removal or any activity that results in increased erosion and weed invasion will be detrimental.
