Diagnostic Characteristics: Plants diminuitive (less than 10 cm tall ) and often forming dense mats. Plants occur in open wetlands. Leaves are lance-linear (5-8 mm wde) and thickened apically. Flower pistils are numerous and densely packed over the surface of the receptacle (referring to the common name burhead), fewer than 20 pistils in this species. Anthers are basifixed (attached in the middle). Flowers with three white petals and 9 stamens.

Management: Avoid changes in moisture/hydrologic conditions at the site. Changes could result from overstory removal, stream/wetland alteration or impacts due to erosion. Exotic pest plant are a threat and should be removed.

Global Range: Texas to Florida, north locally to Massachusetts, New York, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri and Kansas. Although widely distributed, it is considered rare, historical or extirpated in almost every state in its range.
