Habitat:
Dry limestone hills, river bottoms and low inundated woods; Medley lists dry oak-hickory forest on slopes bluffs and knobs.

Species Description:
Woody perennial.

Phenology:
Flowering Period: Early April to late April.

Diagnostic Characteristics:
Southern shagbark hickory has slender glabrous twigs and leaves are mostly glabrous as well. The bark is shaggy. The fruit is < 3.5 in length and the husk is thick.

Management:
Timber removal would be detrimental.Disturbance such as ATV trails, timber removal or any activity that results in increased erosion and weed invasion will be detrimental.

IN, KY, southern VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, TN, AR, and MS.
