On rocks (apparently most often acidic substrate), sometimes on a thin mantle of soil in woods (Crum and Anderson, 1981). In KY, sandstone rocks and bark at base of tree.

Diagnostic Characteristics:
Rather slender plants in dense, light or yellow-green, somewhat shiny mats. Stems creeping; branches slender and terete. Stem leaves about 1.6-1.8 mm long, somewhat decurrent. Branch leaves erect when dry, erect-spreading when moist, not or slightly plicate, 1-1.6 mm lnog, lanceolate, slenderly acuminate, not or only slightly decurrent.

Management:
Vegetation removal or large scale disturbance may be detrimental.
