On rocks (especially limestone) also commonly on bark at or near the base of trees, less often on rotten logs and stumps (Crum and Anderson 1981).

Diagnostic Characteristics:
Rather coarse plants in dark-green, yellowish, or brownish dense mats. Leaves not ending in a hair point; margins plane. Primary stems often produce stolons with small, wide-spreading or squarrose leaves; secondary stems and branches erect-ascending. Leaves scarcely tapered from the shoulders to the rounded apex, rounded-auriculate at the base, leaves erect and contorted when dry.

Management:
Vegetation removal or other large scale site changes may be detrimental.
