Habitat: Wet meadows, fields and ditches; also floodplain forests and moist, rich slope forests (Weakley 1998).

Diagnostic Characteristics: Bluestar is distinctive in having blue flowers, alternate leaves, milky sap, and flowers in terminal clusters. This species occurs in wet woods including the rara variety, gattingeri. This variety is distinguished by its narrower leaves (less than 3 cm wide).

Management: Avoid changes in moisture conditions at the site. These could result from overstory removal, changes in hydrology (stream alteration or increased erosion for example).Avoid degradation of water quality or changes in natural stream flow.

Global Range: Occurs only in Kentucky and Tennessee.
