Habitat:
Cliffs, talus, rocky slopes, rich stream-bottom forests, cool rocky forests (Weakley 1998); well drained sunny openings, rocky and sandy slopes. invasive following fire and logging.

Species Description:
Herb, bien/perennial vine.

Phenology:
Flowering Period: Early June to late September.

Diagnostic Characteristics:
Plants climbing; white to purplish, flowers are strongly irregular and the outer two petals stongly connivent (joined), nearly to the apex (end); 6 stamens in two groups.

Management:
Exotic pest plants are a threat to this species. May tolerate some timber removal if done without excessive soil disturbance (discing/chopping) and if immediate vicinity of plant is protected from debris and direct cutting etc.

Global Range:
Widespread but infrequent in eastern and central North America (Kartesz, 1999).
