Habitat:
Cool, moist, mesic woods. often associated with cool air drainages from caves, or at high elevations; periglacial boulderfields (Weakley 1998).

Species Description:
Perennial tree.

Phenology:
Flowering Period: Early May to late July.
Fruiting Period: Early August to late October.

Diagnostic Characteristics:
Flowers appear in May and June (not early spring) and are in a terminal erect panicle. Leaves are coarsely serrate. Bark is not striped.

Management:
Timber removal would be detrimental.
