Habitat:
A calciphile, on dry, exposed rocks, soil, or turf on sand of partially stabilized dunes, among talus at the base of cliffs, or on humus in open coniferous stands.

Species Description:
Moss.

Phenology:
Rarely found fruiting.

Diagnostic Characteristics:
Rather coarse and wiry moss, with loosely one-pinnate branching. The xeric and calcareous habitat is also helpful in recognition. The species was name in reference to a supposed resemblance to Abies, or fir, perhaps in the flat manner of branching.

Grazing or browsing pressure, vegetation removal, successional changes.
